Happy (belated) New Year!

March 7, 2019

"Not at Rest"

Choreography: Kristin Taylor Duncan

Dancers: Jasmine Powell and Megan Ross

Kwanzaa Celebration 2019

2019 is off to a dance filled start - on January 1, I had the opportunity to perform "Not at Rest" with the KT Collective at the African American Dance Ensemble's Kwanzaa Celebration. Not only was this my first performance of the new year, but my first performance with the KT Collective! It was exhilarating to start out 2019 with this joy-filled celebration.

"The Finish Line"

Dancers: Jackie Bennett, Madeline Braxton, Helen Hickey, and Heather Pike

Backstage at NCMOH's "Celebration of Movement Inspired by Ernie Barnes" 2019

"The Finish Line"; a sneaker dance inspired by native Durham artist and athlete, Ernie Barnes, was included in the North Carolina Museum of History's SOLD OUT "Celebration of Movement Inspired by Ernie Barnes" on January 25. Based on Barnes's paintings, "Dead Heat" and "The First Maestro", and accompanied by Sam Cooke's soulful "Bring It On Home to Me"; this piece challenged the dancers to switch between, and at times combine, their own identities as athletes and artists.

Urban Dance is a style of dance, community, and lifestyle revolving around choreography influenced by several different dance styles, but is ultimately based on the choreographer’s own interpretation of the music. Urban Dance started primarily in competitions and showcases in the collegiate dance team community in California. Some great teams to look at for references of Urban Dance are GRV and Choreo Cookies, as well as local teams, like UNC Kamikazi and Fusion Dance Crew.
